Couple Portraits And Why You Should Do Them
Betti here from Surfin Birds! Today I wanted to talk about Couple Portraits And Why You Should Do Them.
For years couples have been asking me why I think it is important to book a couple portrait session. After years of explaining in person to couples, today I wanted to share with all of you my thoughts on the matter.
Whether you are an unmarried couple, an engaged couple or a couple who has been married for years, COUPLE PORTRAITS ARE A FANTASTIC IDEA. My husband Ryan and I try to take couple portraits whenever we have the chance. We have taken couple portraits together since we have first met and we continue to take them after we have been married – here is why you should take them:
THE UNMARRIED COUPLE…
As an unmarried couple I find doing a couple portrait session together is a perfect way of telling each other I LOVE YOU. It tells each person that you are serious about one another and that you are willing to invest time and money in incredible photos that you both can look back on in the coming years.
Now listen up gentlemen, if you are in a relationship and you are looking for the perfect gift for your significant other for her birthday, for Valentine’s Day, Christmas, New Years´ or just for no reason at all but to surprise her, book her and you a couple portrait session. Nothing says I LOVE YOU like doing couple portraits. Trust me, you will thank me later.
Here is a few photos from different couple portrait sessions we have done in the United States, specifically in Colorado. My husband Ryan lived in Colorado for years and this state holds a special place in both of our hearts. The first few photos are taken up near Boulder near the Rocky Mountains of our longtime friends Devin and Larissa and Mark and Dylan.
The more urban photos are of Camille and Ben and were taken in Downtown Denver around Denver Union Station, the Crawford Hotel, the Colorado Rockies Baseball Stadium and by the beautiful Maven Hotel at Dairy Block.
THE ENGAGED COUPLE…
This is important, so listen up. If you are an engaged couple, it is absolutely important that you schedule an engagement photo session. Preferably with your wedding photographer – if you have already found one. If not with your wedding photographer it is not the end of the world, we highly recommend doing it anyway.
On your wedding day, there are no redo’s, second chances or next time. You have ONE SHOT to get it right, that is it. So it is extremely important that both you and your spouse have some experience in front of the camera. We are not talking about experience in front of a cell phone camera at the bar on a Saturday night, that does not count.
Ask yourself: Why would you spend thousands of dollars on a wedding photographer and not invest any real experience in front of a camera? The last thing you, your spouse or your wedding photographer wants is for you to feel uncomfortable, awkward or shy in front of the camera on your wedding day.
Booking an engagement session before your wedding helps eliminate any uneasiness or shyness. It gives you and your spouse a chance to get comfortable in front of the camera. To get familiar with posing helps you have a better understanding of how it will actually be on your wedding day. Come your wedding day you may still have nervousness, but you will be a pro in front of the camera.
Engagement sessions also make for perfect save the date cards/wedding invitations for you to send out to your wedding guests.
Below are a few pictures of an engagement photo session Ryan and I did in Tulum, Mexico, where we met Tyler and Sera, a beautiful couple from Toronto, Canada. After he proposed on the beach in Tulum we did an engagement session with them outside of our resort at Kore Tulum Retreat and Spa.
THE MARRIED COUPLE…
So, you have beautiful wedding pictures and you have been married for awhile or even a LONG while. Why do you need to do another couple portrait session?
Booking a couple portrait session after you have been married is a great way for you to reconnect with your spouse. If you are like me and my husband you probably have thousands of photos on your cell phone of the two of you from going out to dinners, family gatherings or trips you have taken together. But how often do the two of you actually sit down on the couch together and scroll through your cell phone and look at all the pictures? If it is like us, probably NEVER.
It is important to take time out of your busy schedules, to get out of your regular sweat pants and T-shirt and dress up nice for a change. Show your spouse that you still care about looking good. That you still love them unconditionally and show your spouse that it is time to hang some new pictures of the two of you on the wall of your house.
I have found with my husband Ryan that since we have been married, the professional couple portraits that we do together are the most important. We get to dress up nicely, we do something that is fun and outside the norm of our daily routine and it gives us a chance to be romantic with one another. Something that can easily be forgotten in a marriage. Plus I get to decorate our house with new beautiful photos, something Ryan says is an excuse to go shopping for new picture frames 🙂
Regardless, I believe doing couple portraits after you are married is a must. Many of you may know that our company Surfin Birds Photography and Film has moved into the Arizona wedding market in addition to the Austrian wedding market. Apart from having family in Chandler, Arizona, we chose Arizona because it offers several beautiful places to photograph including Flagstaff, The Grand Canyon, Cathedral Rock in Sedona, Camelback Mountain near Scottsdale and one of our favourites: Peralta Trail in the Superstition Wilderness, where pictures of our next couple are from.
Below are some pictures of Giulia and Mike, a married couple from Toronto, Canada that we met while in Phoenix, Arizona. They were on vacation in Scottsdale for some reconnecting time after a few years of marriage and booked us for a couple portrait session. Ryan and I were thrilled to take them out in the desert and get some incredible shots of the beautiful Arizona cacti and surrounding mountain landscape.
